The evening began like any other. The lights in the store were cold, the floor was shiny, and the air smelled of dust and cheap detergent.

Peter didn’t flinch.

“Step back,” he said.

Kalin looked at me, at Maria, at Sylvia. He felt that he was not the only predator in the room.

“This is not the end,” he whispered, slowly stepping back. “Vladimir will crush you. All of you.”

It came out.

The silence remained like a heavy stone.

Peter turned to us, took a breath.

“You have to run,” he said. “Dad will find out I’m here. And then… then it’ll get ugly.”

Maria nodded.

“We’re leaving,” he said.

Sylvia took Peter’s hand.

“Come with us,” he whispered.

Peter shook his head.

“I can’t,” he said. “If I disappear, he’ll find out everything. I have to stay and play my part a little longer. So we can have time.”

I looked at him and felt a respect I hadn’t expected.

“Be careful,” I said.

Peter nodded.

“You too,” he replied. “And save Mila.”

We went out through the backyard. The night swallowed us.

And I knew: after that night there was no turning back.

But there was a chance.

A chance for the truth to come out.

A chance for good to prevail.

A chance for the ending to be what it should be: bright.

Even if the road there is dark.

Chapter Fifteen

In the following days, everything accelerated like an avalanche.

Maria filed complaints. She filed lawsuits. She sent documents. She demanded records. She got the legal people moving. And most importantly – she secured protective measures for Raya and Mila.

Vladimir reacted instantly. Not with a direct blow, but with pressure from all sides.

First, my bank rang. The voice was polite but cold:

– Sir, there has been a change in the terms and conditions. We demand immediate payment of overdue amounts. Otherwise, we will take action.

“But I…” I began.

“There is no ‘but,’” the voice said. “This is a procedure.”

Maria looked at me.

“This is Vladimir,” she whispered. “He’s using your credit to break you.”

Then – I received a letter saying that a report was being filed against me for “aiding theft.”

Kalin.

Maria laughed when she saw him.

“The more they lie, the more they panic,” he said.

But their panic was dangerous. They were playing with our lives.

Raya was weaker. Her breathing got worse. Lydia and Sylvia helped, brought medicine, talked to doctors. Mila learned not to cry in front of her mother, but in the evenings, when she thought no one could hear her, she would curl up and sob quietly.

One evening I sat next to her.

“Honey,” I said. “I know you’re scared.”

She looked at me with wet eyes.

“If Mom leaves…” he whispered. “He’ll take me, right?”

“No,” I said firmly. “There isn’t.”

“How are you so sure?” he asked.

I took a breath.

“Because you’re not alone anymore,” I said. “And because there are people who will stand by you, even if it hurts.”

Mila swallowed.

“Why?” he asked. “Why are you doing this? You could have left while still in the store.”

I was silent. Then I told the truth:

– Because someone has to say “enough” someday. And because when I saw you… I remembered what it was like to be little and have no one to protect you.

Mila stared at her hands.

“I am no good,” she whispered. “I stole.”

“You were hungry for hope,” I said. “That doesn’t make you bad.”

She cried, but this time quietly, as if in release.

And then the door opened. Maria came in, holding a folder and a phone.

“We have a date,” he said.

“What for?” I asked.

“About the case against Kalin and the store,” she said. “And the trial… is scheduled soon.”

My stomach clenched.

“And Vladimir?” I asked.

Maria smiled thinly.

“Vladimir will show up,” he said. “He won’t be able to stand watching Kalin fall alone. And when he does, we’ll tie him up.”

“How?” I asked.

Maria opened the folder and showed me photos of documents from the safe.

– With this – he said. – And with the witnesses. Thomas is ready to speak. Peter… is ready. Sylvia… too.

“This is war,” I whispered.

“Yes,” said Maria. “But the war has a direction now. And this time he doesn’t control everything.”

Mila stood next to us and listened, as if she were learning to believe.

At that moment, Raya whispered from the bed:

– Nikola…
